The “Sentry”, a 300-year-old oak in the heart of the sprawling orchard and rose garden, keeps a watchful eye over the property.
The charm of the Lights
I
With the majestic River Dordogne at its feet, this pure 18th century chateau is a jewel in the Bordeaux region’s crown, a little wonder of architectural balance set in the middle of 13 hectares of vineyards.
t is like a powerful blast from the past. A glimpse into what life was like for provincial aristocrats at the end of the 18 th century, a luxurious lifestyle far from the Court of Versailles, at a time when trade with the West Indies had given the Bordeaux region new-found prosperity. Outside, the "Sentry", a 300-year-old oak tree, stands guard over an immense orchard and matching rose garden. Inside, it has everything - arched windows and doorways, marble fireplaces, mouldings, small mouth-blown panes, 18 th century Médoc furniture, and much more. The ground floor is entirely devoted to the many receptions held there shortly before the French Revolution. Later, three or four generations of wine merchants fell under the spell of this property and its unique setting - several hectares of grounds overhanging the River Dordogne, at the exact area where a fascinating natural phenomenon can be witnessed every spring tide - a "tidal bore", a spectacular wave that travels 200 km upriver and attracts surfers. The 18 hectares of grounds, woodland, 100-year old oaks and plane trees hugging the property feature a pool ideally situated overlooking the river.
The arched patio doors open onto a ground floor with five reception rooms pointing towards the river.
